" The Democrat has received from Editor Hetherington, of the Lakeland News Olando, Fla., a copy of that paper which contained tho following article dedicated to Marion and Western North Caro lina. Two years ago he spent several Bays in Marion and several weeks in this section. "If thou art worn and hard beset With sorrows that thou wouldst foreet T 1. i . . " tuu wooiost read a lesson that will keep Thy heart from fainting, and thy sonl from sleep Go to the woods and hills'. No tears uim tne sweet look that Nature wears " Perhaps every dweller in th lowlands feels at times, more or less insistent, the longing for the peace and silence of the high places Certain, if his early life were pas sed in a broken country, his mem ory many times will go back and linger lovingly amid the cool shad ows and purpling mists of his boy hood's hills. In one of Miss John stones splendid romances, tfTe hero ine, sorrow-stricken and sick al most unto death, sets out to make her way back to the mountains of her early youth. In this instinct ive longing for the companionship of the hills, many a wounded heart will sympathize with the lovely and ill-fated Audrey. Aye, far from the maddening crowd there are purpling peaks and wooded slopes, where Nature has stored a balm for every heart that mourns, a solace for every soul world-weary and passion-seared. In the holy hush of the for est's dim recesses, where, "like Druids of old," the columns of God's first temples'' sta.Dd in ser-J ned ranks, the little things of life seem very far away; and a great peace reigns, like to that which dwells within the solemn arches of old cathedral halls. Stillness un broken save from the redolent earth, vague, mysterious whisper ings that soothe, and soft sighings that fill the soul with a sweet sad ness, like to the memory of one loved long ago -and lost. And, towering above, the sentinel hills, solemn and somber, and pregnant with silences and secrets inscruta ble then calm and majesty rebuk ing ever the sordid struggles, the fevered follies, the shams and foi bles, the ant-like littleness of that which men call life! We must go back from the hills back from their brooding peace to the turmoil and f the grind where enmities are ever bitter and friendships are sometimes false. Back from the mountain Vrnajesty to life's petty commonplaces the little things that wear men's hearts away! Back from woodland wan derings to the amphitheater of the streets where the race is mostly to the swift and the battle to the strong! Yet, thank God for the woods and hills where sometimes one may seek rest for tho wearied spirit, respite from tne siriiei Where only echoes, faint and very far away, remind us that still the relentless Juggernaut of Fate -is crushing- human hearts and hopes -where we may forget for a little space man's inhumanity to manl Grandfather , Mountain Park.. Messrs. Hugh and Donald Mac- Rae, of Wilmington, -havejnade the State very much their debtor by presenting Grandfather moun tain as a gift. Charged with the stealing of $1, 150 George Hammett, a white man, was arrestod in J. W. Trout man. store last week by Deputy Sheriff Jm P. ltay and landed in the county jail to await tho arrival of officers from Mitchell county where the man is wanted on thethargeof Tiousebreaking. Some time ago party or parties entered the home of IVard Hose, who lives in Mitchell county and stole $1,150 which was tied in a sack and hid in a mattress on one of the beds. The money was all in cash and was the saving of t long time. Suspicion rested upon Hammett and he immediately pull ed out from that section coming to McDowell county where the officers think he has been hiding for some time. The McDowell authorities have been on the look out for the man for some time as a reward of one hundred dollars was banging over his head. Last Thursday the man wis in Marion and went in TrouLroint hardware store where he was try ing to exchange a small calibre pistol for a larger one. Officer Ray was passing the store at the time and saw the man. He im mediately went in and placed Ham mett under arrest and communicat ed with the Mitchell countyaoth- orities. It is the belief of the local auth orities that Hammett b an all around crook of. the first water.
